Bamboo stems: maintenance and life of bamboo constructions.

Safety

Mechanical safety Bamboo is a material with interesting mechanical properties; the high modulus of elasticity and tensile strength combined with the efficient hollow shape make bamboo a material with many possible applications in construction.

In Asia and South America in particular, various large construction projects have already been implemented with bamboo as the main load-bearing structure. In Europe too, interest in bamboo as a building material has increased in recent years .

Beautiful, strong and loyal.

Examples: ZERI pavilion EXPO 2000, bamboo bridge Amsterdam Wood, siding for police station in Paris and multi-storey car park in Leipzig. Previously, the biggest problems with using bamboo in Europe were in the sphere of building regulations. Since there were no (building) standards for bamboo in Europe, additional mechanical tests often had to be carried out on the material in order to demonstrate its structural adequacy and finally obtain a building permit .

Tomorrow's timber!

Now that the ISO standards ISO 22156 and ISO 22157 have been in force since 2004, this drawback no longer exists. The bamboo stems for load-bearing applications can now be supplied along with a report with the mechanical properties stipulated by ISO 22156 and 22157. For decorative, non-constructional uses of bamboo the mechanical properties are not required .

Fire safety

The fire resistance of bamboo stems is roughly the same as that of wood owing to the similar chemical structure of both materials. On the outside, however, bamboo has a natural protective layer composed mainly of silicon, resulting in the outside being well protected, even against fire.

In Germany, the bamboo used for the ZERI pavilion during EXPO 2000 was classified as class B2 in accordance with DIN 4102 part 4, which is the same as wood with a thickness above the 400 kg/m3. Just as with wood, fire safety can be increased by applying a fire-resistant layer .

Maintenance and life
The below factors are of great importance for the life span of bamboo constructions:
" use of good bamboo species
" selection of stems on age and quality
" use of good preservation and drying techniques
" a good build design in terms of the construction in which bamboo is being used
" using detachable attachments

Under the influence of varying weather conditions, particularly exposure to rain and sunshine, little cracks will appear in the bamboo. The appearance of cracks is inherent in the use of this natural material. By means of a good build design, in which the bamboo is kept away from the ground and is protected from becoming damp, its life span will be increased. If the above factors are complied with, a life span of 15 years can be expected.

In the unlikely event of replacements being necessary, this can be done by using detachable attachments. Due to the low weight of bamboo, replacements can be done ad hoc .

Sustainability (ecofriendliness)
With regard to ecofriendliness, bamboo is the best choice that can be made in the range of available building materials. Research at Delft Technical University, using the ISO-certified LCA (Life-Cycle Assessment) method, has shown that bamboo, used as stem and compared with the usual building materials over the entire life-cycle (from cradle to grave), is the most environmentally friendly alternative.

By making use of a detachable construction method, the stems can be replaced in one piece. Due to bamboo being a 100% natural product and being completely biodegradable as a result, it can be processed in a sustainable way at the end of its life span .

Design aspects
There are many different species of bamboo with different characteristics, sizes and colours. Bamboo does not have a set diameter (no two bamboo stems are exactly alike), the stems taper and are not completely straight.
